A player's perspective of the Program

"Being apart of the SunCity Wheelers has been the best sporting experience of my life. It's a welcoming environment filled with fun and new challenges to rise to."
Connor Reid

The Wall of SunCity Members!
We've had many amazing moments, accomplishments, and milestones but SunCity isn't the amazing program it is without our past, present & future players, volunteers, and supporters. Here is part of our website that we celebrate all the faces that have contributed and been apart of this foundation at some point of time. We extend our gratitude of all past players, volunteers, support squad, management, sponsors and the effort they have put in. This page along with the whole website will be updated the more we grow. You are all apart of the SunCity family for eternity and are always welcome back to the team with open arms. #SUNCITYWHEELERSFOREVER

Jeanette Hawes
#16
Jeanette has been with us since June of 2023 in which she has always pushed her hardest and is always smiling! She encourages her teammates whilst making an amazing effort in every opportunity she can. We are so happy to see the growth for Jeanette as she works her hardest out of everyone to fill her role and be a pivotal part of the team.

Richard Cordukes
Ex-Paralympian, Mentor, Club Ambassador
Richy has been part of our program since the very start. He constantly shows up to training with an amazing energy. The kind soul of Richard is always displayed through his kind donations, fantastic suggestions, and reaching out to anyone/company that would love to get involved with our program. We are so lucky to have Richy apart of our program as he is the definition of what SunCity stands for.

John Bourke
The legend known as John attended multiple sessions starting back in late March of 2024, bringing his friendly smile and energy to the program he became a popular character amongst all our players at the program. We hope to see you back soon John!

Oliver Myatt
#21
Ollie will always be apart of a very special milestone we had in which he joined and played extremely well in our first ever 5v5 competition we participated in. Held in January of 2025, we were apart of the T25 SunCoast Spinners competition. Oliver lead the SunCity Wheelers in Points in the competition with 37points over 8 games. A great young player and even better person. Hopefully we team up with the young Fraser Coaster again in the future!

Ayla Price
Ayla attended a few sessions with her friends and brother after their team practice on another court. As soon as she jumped in a chair our experienced players were blown away with how easy she was scoring and made the transition from shooting standing up to sitting down look easy. Hopefully see you back down on a Tuesday night soon Ayla!

Zara Crowe
After receiving an invite by one of her friends Zara came along to a session. She got right into the games and was always a joy in the games. She helped the team build a great chemistry with her chatty and positive personality. We appreciate everything that Zara has been a part of with SunCity.

Marty Dyer
#11
Marty came into our program as a pure shooter whom was one of the few who could launch them from beyond the 3-point line. Marty brought laughs and some fun banter with him to every session, he has been in and out of sessions since June of 2023. We hope to see him back soon!

Xanthe Lamari
Xanthe joined our program back in the early part of our first year and has participated in almost 50 sessions of our Tuesday night training sessions. Xanthe became well known for always smiling even in games and brought so much joy in every moment that she was in when being apart of our weekly training sessions. Other than her amazing energy she was also an amazing shooter and helped us grow into our current foundation. She will forever be apart of the SunCity fam and we hope to see her back sometime in the future!

Torben Louwen-Skovdam
#11, AUS Invictus Games Athlete 2025
Tubs became a member of our team in August of 2024 in which he made an immediate impact on the court. He came in performing great against our best players, he hasn’t slowed down since. He was voted as the winner of the SunCity Hustle award in 2024 by his peers for this award as he defines this award. Never giving up on a play no matter what side of the floor it is. We are so happy and proud for Torbs he puts his best effort in always and is smashing goals because of it!

Shyanne Murray
#29
Miss Shyanne began shooting with us on the 29th of August 2024. Through the small amount of time she has levitated as one of our best offensive players we have, being one of three finalist for the 2024 awards. She was not only runner up for Rookie of the Year, but also a finalist in voting for Most Improved Player, and Most Valuable Player. She has developed into such an amazing player in such a small time but has always been valued for her wonderful atmosphere she brings as a person to each Tuesday night. We look forward to many more with Shyanne and her friends!

Terry Ansell
Co-Founder, #57
Terry Co-founded the team in early February of 2023. Through his time at the program he helped make decisions with the development of team training sessions and helped develop players through skilful moves and drill on the court. Terry departed the program in November of 2023 but we are forever grateful for his contribution in helping start up a thriving reverse-inclusive non-for-profit program.

Connor Reid
Connor's first session came on 25th of July 2023. Connor unfortunately wrapped up his time at our club in October of 2024. Almost 50 sessions with this legend, other than just between the 4 lines Connor became someone that was very generous with his time, starting a conversation with anyone, helping with setup and packing up the sessions, volunteering when he could and was really into making extra training a priority. He is still known at our club as one of the most talented players we've seen, hopefully we see him down the road at some point for a return!

Amba Stevens
#3
Bambie took the court for her first time with us in late July of 2024. Amba has showed everyone with her positive attitude and play on the court that she is working her way up to being one of our best stars. Amba’s shooting ability is next level and her movement is nothing like we’ve ever seen. She continues to shine and never surprises us anymore with all the amazing skills she has!

Andy Branson
#6, Jack's Joint Owner
Andy's first session with the program was the 2nd of May of our first year in 2023. Through the time that Andy was at our program he became a mentor for all the new players and even helped out with coaching. Andy and his team at Jack's Joint was a sponsor towards the program for a year and a half in which they worked hard in volunteering their time at Sausage sizzles, maintenance towards all the wheelchairs that may have needed to be fixed or looked at. It's with deep thanks to Andy, Jo, and Tristan that we were able to have the best performing wheelchairs working perfectly for each session. Andy will forever be apart of the program's milestones and we wish nothing but the best for Jack's Joint and we encourage all viewers to go and have a look into what amazing work they do.

Tristan Lyne
#69
Yep he indeed did choose that jersey number lol. Lyne himself has been apart of our program since the 2nd of May 2023. Tristan came through as a first timer in the sport. He always was perfecting his craft on the court whilst helping wherever he could off the court. Whether that was preparation or at a BBQ sausage sizzle, helping regarding chair maintenance with Andy, or other helpful tasks. We are so glad to have Tristan looking at a chair when its not in its best quality. We always appreciate the chats and humour that Tristan brings with every interaction.

Harrison Spargo
#41
Coming into his first session on the 27th of Feburary 2024. Harrison starting making shots like it was nothing. Even through that skill of his shooting he always creates looks and is willing to pass to make the best play possible. He is not only a mature young man but also a mature player with his basketball IQ. We appreciate him for his humour and can-do attitude. We all really look forward to seeing Harrison and his siblings whenever they pop in on Tuesdays. Hope to see you again soon!

Rebecca
Rebecca came attended our program on our second session ever with her daughter Chelsea. Rebecca challenged our best player at the time defensively with her long arms and her quick speed in the chair, it had seemed she played the sport before knowing how quick she had picked up the skills. We hope Rebecca is doing well and one day comes back to enjoy our sport once again.

Brodie Roberts
Brodie was apart of our very first session. He was also there for the preparation it took to get to that point. Brodie brought a funny side to our sessions, not only could he put the ball in the basket but he also made sure that everyone was having a good time. He could make anyone laugh at the program. Though he departed after five sessions he is truly a special part of the SunCity journey and just like all the players he is welcome back anytime.

Hannah Spargo
#41
Attending her first session on the 27th of February 2024, Hannah became a favourite teammate for so many at our program. With her amazing sense of humor and will to make every shot she takes Hannah is always so valued when she makes an appearance whenever she can. We hope to see her back soon!

Jak Holman
Jak has been at the program since almost the beginning. He enjoys coming for a hoop session alongside his brother every so often. It's with so much joy that we have when Jak rocks up for a roll.

Deola D'Brown
3x3 MadeConcepts Leader and SunCity Ambassador.
Pushing the basketball movement not only here in Australia but across the world. He is a 3x3 basketball phenomenon was introduced to us through Brodie Stephens in which Deola invited us to participate in an all-inclusive basketball 3x3 event held in communities in Queensland through to the end of the year where the main event is held in Brisbane. We thank Deola for his constant help in every way he can possible and we look forward to many more MadeConcept Events down the road!

Noah King
#57
King of the court himself played a few sessions with us before playing along side Solomon and Byron as part of the 3x3 MadeConcepts SunCity team 1 in which was the first competition we had ever played in representing the program. Amazing human!

Kavasa Lepaio
#60
If we had a competition for who's beard looks more similar to Santa's we would all agree Mr Kava would take that one home. Kava started with us in the beginning of September 2024. Kava quickly made his mark pulling off some flashy passes whilst taking some of the longest shots we've seen taken in all our training sessions. With Kavasa coming in the top 3 for voting of our Rookie of the Year award for 2024 we can't wait to see how he improves his game next!

Tara Bell
This fantastic individual joined our squad in the early days of July 2023 through to April of 2024. After a few months in Tara brought her friends along with her to have a go at this amazing sports. She was a very positive player and always had a smile on her face, we loved seeing weekly but unfortunately with other commitments she was unable to attend our Tuesday sessions anymore. We hope to see her back soon!

Jo Branson
#8
Jo's first session was back in mid May of 2023. Jo along will always remain as a pivotal part of our program as she helped with getting eyes on our program and opportunities out in the community that SunCity could be involved in, along with volunteering her time with sausage sizzles and other volunteering events. Jo not only did amazing things for us off the court but she was also a very positive, bubbly, and lovely player to have at training every Tuesday night. The amazing work Jo, Andy, and Tristan brought to our chairs through their company Jack's Joint has always been appreciated they have given us opportunities that we couldn't have imagined through their past sponsorship with also making sure our chairs are working the best for when we all hit the court. Jo will forever be apart of the program's milestones we thank her and Andy for many highlights throughout their time with us, we wish nothing but the best for her, Andy and Jack's Joint

Cooper Hannah
Vice President, Management - #25
In early May of 2023, Cooper joined our squad and through many training sessions he has perceived as one of our many stars with not only skills that he presents between the four lines, he also brings an amount of amazing leadership that is irreplaceable. Cooper was named MVP of the 2023 season his performance reflects it along with helping others with whatever they need to talk or want to improve on. Cooper joined our management in August of 2023 in which he has helped since with duties such as social media development, training session rituals, equipment management, etc. We are so grateful to have the presents of our fabulous player and Co-Captain.

Tracey Vass
#14
Tracey has been with our program since the very start. From the first session to our most recent she has showed the energy of a warrior and a defensive star. Tracey over time has adjusted her game to help with screening and seeing the floor to make it easier for our shooters whilst not letting anyone shoot a shot over her. Tracey won the first ever Defensive player of the year award in our program in 2024. Tracey also competed in our first ever 5v5 competition down in the Sunshine Coast making an amazing debut for not only the team but for herself. Truly a remarkable player and human.

LUCIANA
Motivation for Occupation
Luciana and her team were the first ever sponsor we had at our program, through mutual connections from some of our players she found us and came along to one of our first three training sessions back in March in 2023. She was an amazing human that would always give us helpful ideas that would help us get more eyes on us from the community. We appreciate all the support they have showed us through the years and we hope to see them back at our program soon!

Joey Lua
#99
I think you'll have a hard time finding someone that smiles as much as this man on and off the court. Joey is such a joyous person and player to have apart of our program who's always up for a chat and never shy's a way from a laugh. After coming along with his brother to a Tuesday night session in late 2024. We hope to see you back soon Mr Joey!

Ingrid Dalhstorm
#21
With a few sessions already in the bag before making an appearance with SunCity, Ingrid came in shining with her shooting and ball handling skills, blowing the opposing team away with her skills in the scrimmage game that first night. Though Ingrid hasn't attended the program in a couple of months due to health concerns . We hope she is taking care and we can't wait to see her amazing personality back on the court soon!

Hudson Spargo
#41
One our youngest ballers joined his Spargo clan on the 27th of February 2024 when they all participated in their first session of our program. Every time we see Hudson he is always smiling, making fun moments and playing adorable tricks on some of our players. He is a kid with a lot of passion and everytime he rolls onto the court with us we witness that. Hopefully see this champion back again soon!

Luke Louwen-Skovdam
#77
Luke came along to a session in late 2024 where can quickly picked up the skills not only was he great at shooting, chair skills, but also picked up screening very quickly. We are so grateful to have another Skovdam apart of our squad. with his offensive arsenal he is definitely one of our up and coming stars.

Hannah Roberts
#41
Hannah has been at our program since late 2023 where she has come along with one of our other players. In and out of the program Hannah always brought a fun atmosphere with her. With many laughs and conversations about it, Hannah finally decided to join in on a session after being a spectator for months. After that first time she found some fun out of it and decided to join in instead of being a spectator as the fun was contagious. A few months later Hannah played in one of the MadeConcepts 3X3 teams with us. We are always so pleased to see Hannah at our program each Tuesday, and here's to many more!.

Charles Joyce
#41
Charles was introduced to us through the SunCoast Spinners in which he joined up with our squad and shared the first time experience for not only the program but also for himself in a basketball 5v5 competition. Charles has played for NZ and the newly founded NQ Cowboys wheelchair Rugby team before meeting us. Charles charming personality and competitive spirit definitely helped us capture such a special moment in our first ever win at the T25 competition in the Sunshine Coast.

Hayden George
#1
Georgie started with us mid 2023. He was part of the rise in our numbers at the program and played many sessions with us, bringing positive vibes and playing some great basketball. We hope to see Hayden back soon!

Lily Leavers
Lily came to our first session of 2024, in which we rolled through some plays and showed her how we play the game we love, then she was confident enough to jump straight into a game filled with many laughs. It was great to see her just like many that have come and gone through the program.

Solomon Love
#32
Solomon is a well known wheelchair basketball athlete as apart of the Cairns Hoopsnakes however he joined one of our 3 teams in our first ever competition which was apart of the MadeConcepts 3x3 event held in Townsville. A phenomenal player that makes his teammates around him better but his character is second to none. We loved having Mr love apart of our Journey.

Pauline Stevens
#1
Late June of 2024, Pauline began watching our program from the sideline, seeing her daughter and the rest of the players enjoying themselves a few weeks went on and she decided to jump in and get amongst it. Pauline has always been someone that brings many laughs and seems to always be having fun. As one of three voted as the SunCity Hustle Award in 2024, Pauline has shown to never give up on a play and always locked in to the moment during every game. We are very grateful to have Pauline and Amba apart of our program, they are not just great players but amazing people. People like these two build what SunCity are, nothing but respect and inclusiveness for everyone. We appreciate all the moments Pauline has brought to the club and look forward to many more.

Damon Jeanke
Mr Jeanke took the court with us on the 23rd of April 2024. After having a 5 year gap from basketball he decided to jump in a chair to see if he still if his moves had gotten rusty after a spectacular 15+ year bball career. They had not lol. The accomplishments stack on and on for Damon but we were so pleased to have him apart of our training even if it was for one night, not because of just the talent he has for many para sports but for another athlete doing their most to push the importance of mental health not just through life but through sports that's something we strive ourselves on too.

Chelsea
Along with her mum, Chelsea came along to our 2nd session ever. The whole session Chelsea was laughing and seemed to be enjoying her time on the court. We hope to see her return again soon!

Bernice Spargo
Bernice has been to many sessions ranging back to late February of 2024. She always looks forward to our sessions and try's to make it to them whenever she can after the kid's other training sessions. It's always a pleasure seeing Bernice as she is always so happy and looking forward to jumping into a chair. We hope to see her and the Spargo clan again soon!

Jaynee
Jess played in a few sessions through the beginning of our first year, was a great player and represented the RockWheelers in a wheelchair basketball competition in April of 2023.

Theo Price
Peter has been one of our youngest participants that came to a couple of sessions wit his brother and sister. His presence was precious and made everyone giggle. He always joined in and was always smiling.

Byron Holman
CEO, Co-Founder & Management - #13
Byron Co-founded SunCity Wheelers Townsville in February of 2023 with a vision to create an all inclusive environment for athletes of all abilities. Byron has played a pivotal role in shaping the club's culture, focusing on team dynamics and player development through innovative training techniques and community engagement events. Byron co-captained and coached the SunCity Wheelers in their inaugural competitive event at Suncoast Spinner in January 2025.

Wade Joyce
Wade joined us in the middle of 2023 for a couple of sessions and immersed himself into the atmosphere of our program before sadly moving down to Brisbane.

Tyson Dellaway
9th of August was our third appearance as team participating in the 3X3 MadeConcepts event. Tyson watched a couple of games from the side line that night and decided he would like to play. We got him in a chair and straight onto the court he went. It was our first time along with him versing Fraser Coasters that had travelled up to the event. We were so pleased that Tyson wanted to give this great sport a go. We hope to see him at a training session soon!

Karen Waldron
About You Healthcare - Current Sponsor
Karen and her team joined us a sponsor on the 17th of October 2024 and has been nothing but so supportive through this time they have helping us with anything we may need and heling us work towards milestones. We have many projects with them that we look forward to sharing and are cant wait to see her team come down to try our sport out!

Hugh Ross
Bojack
The Professional wrestler from QWA has trained with some of our players through some day sessions that we have run, along with helping out with some maintenance of our equipment and volunteering his time to advertise the program at stalls displayed at events. His contribution off the court has been appreciated as he has helped with displaying the SunCity Wheelers in the broader community. Bojack is looking to be apart of one our teams in our first ever tournament we are holding in June 'Hoops In The Tropics'.

Alison
We were so lucky to have Alison apart of our team. She participated in our programs weekly sessions early on in our first year up and running. She was always a very positive minded person, a lovely person to have in our program and we hope we see Alison back again soon! (Sorry for the blurry photo Alison).

Daniel Spargo
SHP Civil & Construction - Current Sponsor
Dan and his family joined in on our program in February of 2024. This was Daniel's first time playing and experiencing wheelchair basketball program. His team at SHP including Bobby Holman, Bernice Spargo, and more joined as a major sponsor on the 29th of February 2024. We have been so lucky to work with this group of individuals and see the Spargo's regularly down at training jumping in chairs!

Kelvin Woodford
#32
Debuting his wheelchair basketball skills on the 13th of June 2023. Kelvin became a weekly attendee for us in which he created a great on court chemistry with our team. Unfortunately due to work we haven't seen Kelvin recently, hopefully we see this legend back soon!

Jan Skovdam
Coming to a session during the day for a push around with his son Torben, he was interested in learning how to play from a wheelchair position. Jan was impressed with how we could move in our chairs and the height between yourself and shooting in the chair compared to standing up. He was very impressed and enjoy his time. We hope to see Jan back for a Tuesday night session when he returns to Townsville.

Riley Innes
25th of July 2023 Riley came down to have a 2 hour push with us. This was also our 15th session at SunCity. Riley was immersed in the fun that we had and very competitive which are all things we like to see! Hopefully we see Riley back again soon. (Sorry for the blurry photo too Riley).

Kylie Brayshaw
HECSA - Current Sponsor
We introduced ourselves to Kylie and her team at a Regional Disability Expo in May of 2023. Where we discussed if we were looking for sponsors. 28th of June we announced HECSA came on board with sponsoring our program. We are so thankful for all the support and effort Kylie and her team have put into helping our program. Two occasions Kylie has attended our session to see what we look like on the court, with the second time having many family members jump in chairs. (Sorry for the blurry photo Kylie, and we didn't have photos of your kids playing in the session otherwise we would've posted them as well). Hope to see Kylie and her team back soon.

Archie Price
Archie has attended a few sessions now starting back in 2024. He is also so keen to get in a chair and roll. Such a young Superstar!

Henry
Henry attended a couple of training sessions in July of 2023 starting on the 11th. Henry seemed to enjoy this modified sport and the competition that came with it. It was a pleasure to have Henry jump in a chair and see what we are all about as a program and team.

Riley Bacchiella
Mr Riley came to play against our team in 2024 for a few sessions we enjoyed his precense, with a past of basketball he made the transition of playing wheelchair basketball easy. Whether it was a deep 3 or getting to the hoop with speed. It was great to have him!

Jessica Lee
Jess played in a few sessions through the beginning of our first year, was a great player and represented the RockWheelers in a wheelchair basketball competition in April of 2023.
